The Museum of Arts & Sciences offers events and exhibits at 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach.

Volusia County Chess Club 2022 Quick Chess Championship will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Volusia County’s best chess players will be duking it out to determine the area’s best quick chess player. The tournament will be a five match round robin. Free for members or with paid museum admission.

“Minor Masterpieces: Porcelain Painted Scenes from the Collection” will be on display to Dec. 4. The exhibit highlights miniature scenes, some of which were painted by highly-regarded painters, and shows the mostly forgotten technique, once considered essential for the well-dressed table.

Beaux Arts of Central Florida celebrates its 60th anniversary with 42 artists this year exhibiting their art in the juried show “Epiphany: Visions of Art.” The show will run until Nov. 27.

“Art as Alchemy,” an exhibit from Miami’s New World School of the Arts, will be on display until Oct. 16.

“Tech Savvy: Home Technology from 1890s to the 1990s” will be on display until Dec. 4.

“Key West: Southernmost USA” exhibit is on display. Explore the southernmost point of the continental United States.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Poet will be featured at gallery opening

Poet Vicki Iorio will be featured at the Florida Women's Art Association opening at Gallery Elan, 230 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

Ms. Iorio, now a local resident but forever a New Yorker, will perform her funny and contemporary poetry as part of the opening of the association's show.

Autographed copies of her books as well as the new novel, “Vanilla Cinnamon and Dark Chocolate” by Eedwina Louise Dorch, a Florida Women’s Art Association member, will be available for sale. The public is welcome.

Ormond Memorial Art Museum is hosting more than 100 pieces of the Colored Pencil Society of America’s 30th Annual International Exhibition at 78 E. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach.

The 101 pieces, plus two additional pieces from past award winners, will be on display to Nov. 13.

Human Figure Drawing Workshop with Kathleen Lusby will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17. The cost is $45. Participants can bring their supplies.

A two-part ceramic painting workshop with Mari Hurley will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. The cost is $150 for members and $167 for non-members. No experience is needed to bring color to life and create a beautiful olive-themed set (cheese platter and two appetizer plates). Each plate has a pre-drawn design by the teacher. Open to participants 16 and older. All supplies are included.

Sunflower Colored Pencil Workshop with Kathi Darby will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. The cost is $33 for members and $37 non-members. Students will focus on layering, shading, complementary colors and learn to use a solvent (optional). This workshop is appropriate for beginner-intermediate students, 16 and older. Students are responsible for most supplies; supply list are available at the museum.

The Creative Happiness Institute, as part of its sponsorship of the Volusia County Young Poets Mentoring Program, will play a central role in the Daytona Beach poetry conference.

Oct. 21 to 23, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the Florida State Poets Association is sponsoring the first national championship slam poetry competition in Daytona Beach. Competitors are expected from across the country and will be limited to 48 of the top spoken-word poets.

CHI’s Slam Master Kevin Campbell and Volusia County Poet Laureate Dr. David B. Axelrod will assist poetry workshops Oct. 22, and organize the BlackBerry Peach National Poetry Slam Competition on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University.

Each of the 33 NFSPS member states were eligible to enter their best poets in the competition and have been invited to the National Poetry Slam.

There are opportunities to perform and attend workshops. Young poets are counted between 14 up to 21 years of age. Other interested poets may still attend and read as part of open-mike sets and compete in adult categories.

First place prize money will be $2,000; second place, $1,000; third place, $500; fourth place, $250; fifth place to 12th place, $125. Sacrificial poet will receive $100

Atlantic Center for the Arts

Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach has exhibits, classes and activities.

Arts on Douglas, part of ACA, is now accepting submissions to Small Things Considered, the gallery's annual year-end exhibit of works 10 inches by 10 inches or smaller. Florida artists working in all media, excluding video/sound and installation art, may apply. Submit proposals via submittable.com. There is no entry fee. Submission deadline is Oct. 23. Exhibit dates are Dec. 3 to Jan. 10.

ACA Downtown at 123 Douglas St. has “Roses Are Not Always Red” on display in the Feature Gallery from Oct. 1 to 29. “Relics From Youth” by ceramicist Trent Berning is on view in the alt_space Gallery to Oct. 15.

First Saturday at the Hub on Canal has been rescheduled because of Hurricane Ian and will now be Oct. 8. A gallery opening reception will be from 4-7 p.m. in The Founders Gallery for “More Than Words Can Say,” mixed media and prose by Johanna Riddle. Also, Ms. Riddle will offer an opportunity for exhibit viewers to select from provided written passages and create a "piece of art" they feel reflects that passage. The creations can be uploaded to a file Ms. Riddle will manage during the exhibit, which will be on display to Oct. 30. An artist's talk will be a 6 p.m.

Art Connections will meet from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Talk to the artists and learn about the process of creating art. Explore two floors of art in one historic building in the heart of the New Smyrna Beach Arts District.

Robert Shetterly's “Americans Who Tell the Truth, Portraits of Activists” will be on display until Dec. 11, at Museum of Art-DeLand, 600 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

Mr. Shetterly, 75, an activist and self-taught artist, has been painting outspoken Americans for more than 20 years. More than 50 of his portraits will be featured.

Najee Dorsey’s Southern Crossroads will be featured at the Museum of Art-DeLand from Oct. 7 to Dec. 23, at 100 N. Woodland Blvd.

Mr. Dorsey is well known as an “artrepreneur,” a term coined in 2012 by BlackEnterprise.com. He will be the guest of honor at the exhibit’s opening Friday, Oct. 7, at the museum’s downtown gallery. A welcome reception is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m., with a Gallery Walk and Talk with the artist from 6 to 7 p.m.

Admission is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. Reservations are appreciated.

Gateway Center for the Arts

Gateway Center for the Arts hosts pottery classes for adults from noon to 2 p.m. each Wednesday at 880 N. U.S. 17/92, DeBary.

Classes are for beginner and intermediate students. Each session is $50. Masks are required and class sizes are limited.

Open Studio is at 10 a.m. each Tuesday.

A Stained Glass class with Frank Alderfer will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday until Nov. 16. A lunch break will be from noon to 1 p.m. The pre-paid price is $199 for the nine-week session. Each class is $40.
